Causes of Dry Skin (And the Remedies)

What leads to dry skin doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be brought on by using harsh soaps, long, hot showers or even the wrong type of clothing. But medications can also lead to dry skin. It’s important to figure out what’s causing your dry skin in order to treat it.

Dry skin can appear anywhere-most often found on the arms, hands, lower legs, and abdomen and quite often you just feel it instead of see it. Oily Skin – Why You May Have Oily Skin & What To Do About It

Do you have oily skin, continually feel the need to wash your face and wish you could find a way to make those pores looks smaller?

You and millions of other people with oily skin are in the same boat. Mind you, oily skin does not get lines and wrinkles as quickly or as deeply as people with dry skin… So that’s got to be a bonus – although it probably doesn’t make you feel any better about your oily skin problem, does it.

Often, oily skin is associated with acne, however, here we will focus on the classic oily skin type and look at the causes and solutions for oily skin.

Oily skin may be the result of several causes:

  • Hereditary
  • Dietary
  • Hormone levels; Age (puberty/adolescence, Menopause/change of life, etc); Birth control pill; Other medications
  • Pregnancy
  • Cosmetics and/or skin care products you’re currently using
  • Climate

Oily skin may well be in your genes. People from Mediterranean, some Asian and middle-Eastern countries may inherit oily skin from their parents. This is a genetic mechanism to help protect their skin from the high radiation of the sun. However, if you have inherited this skin type, but do not live in the climate it was designed for, this can be a problem and needs to be addressed.

Diet can be both the cause as well as the solution for oily skin. Eating greasy, oily foods will eventually produce oily skin. It is the diet’s fat (and sugar which is converted to fat) content that ends up on the surface of your skin and that is a relatively easy cause to fix. Fix your diet and you’ll fix your oily skin.

Hormonal changes especially during the teenage and change of life years can cause oily skin, often associated with acne. Similarly, pregnancy, during which your hormones change dramatically, may cause oily skin. Usually this is resolved soon after giving birth, menopause has passed or once a teenager’s body reaches maturity.

Often however, the very products you are using are the reason for your oily skin. This can be cosmetic products or skin and personal care products.

Personal products such as soaps are particularly ‘hazardous’. The reason soap is a no-no when it comes to oily skin is that the soap you use to wash your face will initially remove the oil, but it will also dry out your skin causing your skin to over-react and over produce oil which is then secreted onto the skin’s surface and oops, you have oily skin again. This is a condition known as reactive seborrhoea.

Another factor that can lead to oily skin is the climate in which you life. A humid, hot climate may cause your skin to become oily.

Many people have oily areas in one area of their face, but other areas may well be normal or dry. This is known as combination skin. Often the oily area is in the

T-Zone. That is the area covered by your forehead, nasal section and chin. You may however only have oily skin in one of these areas or elsewhere on your face. Irrespective of where the oily skin is, you’ll need to address the cause in order to fix it.

How To Fix Your Oily Skin

Okay, you can’t do much about the genes you’ve inherited, or the fact you’re pregnant or going through a change in hormonal balance. But you can still help your skin to work at a more ‘normal’ level. You can influence the oiliness of your skin and you can take steps to normalize your skin’s oil secretions.

Let’s take a step-by-step look at how you can normalize your skin.

Basic steps applicable to all causes of oily skin type:

  1. Wash your face no more than 2x per day. If you do, you are likely to over stimulate your skin and this will cause it to produce more oil – not the result you want.
  2. Use hot water to wash your face. Hot water is best to dissolve oil. Cold and warm water just doesn’t work as well.
  3. Do NOT use commercial soaps to wash your face. These types of soaps will dry out your skin and this again will result in your skin producing more oil to protect itself against the drying effect caused by the soap.
  4. Eat a healthy diet. What’s a healthy diet? Simple, use unprocessed, fresh fruits and vegetables; do not use foods that have been pre-prepared and/or conserved; do not eat junk food. Stay away from rich, fatty meals.
  5. Drink plenty of clean fresh water (2 liters minimum per day).

The next step is to choose the right type of skin care products. Yes, it’s a little more difficult than just buying a cleanser and moisturizer that smell nice and hope they’ll help your oily skin.

Only purchase natural and organic skin and personal care products. There are many reasons for this, but suffice it to say – why put more junk into your body than is necessary?

Look closely at the ingredients. You will need to look for ingredients that will benefit your oily skin type. So, look for the following essential oils:

  • Lemon
  • Lemon-scented Tea Tree,
  • Calendula,
  • Lavender,
  • Jojoba,
  • Avocado,
  • Bergamot
  • Orange Blossom,
  • Rosemary,
  • Witch hazel,

  1. Follow a daily skin care regime:

The “Healthy” High-Carb Approach

In Nutritional Ketosis…

Nutritional ketosis is a state where your body is “deprived” of glucose; achieved when carbohydrate intake is decreased and protein intake is moderated. In this state, you switch to using fat as energy instead of carbohydrates. This process – of using fat as fuel – produces ketone bodies that are converted into substrates for the Krebs Cycle (energy production).

Once you’re in nutritional ketosis, the storage of triglycerides in blood no longer applies. Blood sugar and insulin levels are reduced, levels of HDL cholesterol increase, and the visceral fats around your vital organs are “eaten up” as fuel.

Clarification of “Being in Ketosis” and “Being Keto-Adapted”

Our bodies burn whatever fuel is available – glucose, fatty acids, ketones, alcohol. Whatever there is more of is what the body will burn for energy.

Following a ketogenic eating style puts you into a state of ketosis. What this means is that your body is breaking down enough fat that ketones in your bloodstream. This happens either by fasting or with the support of a low carb, high-fat, moderate protein eating style. Being “in ketosis” is a normal metabolic state.

One of the goals of the ketogenic eating style is becoming “keto-adapted”. Being keto-adapted means that your body is primed for functioning with very little glucose. This is the END goal of The Keto Beginning.

When you first enter ketosis (a result of following a ketogenic eating style for a couple of days), you are using fat for energy, but it’s in limited amounts at first because you don’t have as many fat-converting enzymes in your body. Different enzymes are involved in breaking down fat than breaking down glucose.

And; up until now, you’ve been breaking down excess glucose more so than fats, so it takes the body a bit of time to “catch up” and store these enzymes when you first get started. This is one of the reasons many people feel tired at the beginning of following a ketogenic eating style. Once the enzymes are built up, your cells change the way they acquire energy and you become fully keto-adapted.

The process of becoming keto-adapted can take a few weeks to a month, depending on the person.

Once you’re keto-adapted, fatty acids and their substrates, ketone bodies, become your body’s preferred fuel. Hormone levels change, the energy stores in liver and muscle (glycogen) are depleted, your body carries around less water, and your energy is boosted to normal levels again.

When the body is keto-adapted and gets an overdose of carbohydrates the process of getting back into ketosis doesn’t take as long as the initial keto-adaptation process because the body is primed to use fat as energy. There’s no law that says you have to eat breakfast foods for breakfast. You legitimately might not feel hungry in the morning, particularly if you aren’t accustomed to eating breakfast.

But you should eat something, even if you make a fairly light choice, like fruit and yogurt. Trying to lose weight is the worst excuse of all. Study after study shows that people who skip breakfast end up eating more the rest of the day than people who eat a solid quick easy healthy breakfast every morning.

So how do you get the magical mix of the right nutrients that will give you energy and send you healthfully into your day?

It’s not that hard, really. Spend a little bit of time thinking about what you like and then plan the best easy healthy breakfast you like. Here are some ideas to get you started:

 

  • If you need something portable, the ever-popular smoothie is a good choice. Be careful when you purchase a smoothie at a shop, however, as some can have as many as 600 calories, this is not a quick easy healthy breakfast!  You can purchase a good blender or smoothie maker to have at home and whip up your own smoothie in less time than it takes to stop at a smoothie store, and you’ll know exactly what’s in it.
  • For an even faster breakfast, try making some breakfast burritos and keeping them in the freezer. You can use regular or whole-wheat tortillas, scrambled eggs (either whole, all whites, a mix, or an egg product), some veggies like peppers and onions, and soy sausage. These freeze beautifully and is one of the best easy healthy breakfast. Pull one out, and while you’re pouring your coffee, it can be heating in the microwave. Add a banana or apple for on-the-go dining.
  • Cereal is a fine breakfast, as long as it’s not the only thing you eat. Consider adding some banana or blueberries on top, or fixing it with soy milk for a healthy dairy addition. Otherwise, stick to skim milk.
  • If you don’t like breakfast, consider making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on wheat bread. Grab a banana on the way out the door. Have some leftover vegetarian pizza from dinner?
